FOUNDER

Kate is an artist and an architect. She founded Hinge Studio in 2010 and Side Rail Collective in 2019. A former mentor once told Kate that she had an amazing “zoomability factor” – the ability to move seamlessly between the big idea and vision to the small details. She has a passion for reinventing and reusing. For Kate, collaboration is key to great architecture and design. Side Rail gives Kate and Hinge Studio a way to broaden their scope of ideas and influences. Being surrounded by such a unique and passionate group of creatives makes all of the work bigger, bolder and better. Side Rail was also formed out of a desire to have a space that is a gift back to the community. A space that is about the growth and expansion of creativity and ideas.

Essa Baird is an interdisciplinary artist whose focus is on abstract sculpture and paintings. She works intuitively with a wide range of materials using ceramic, weaving, and painting techniques to create her works. Subtle and understated, Baird’s work does not rely on bold statements but rather plays with the viewer's personal connections and feelings towards the work. The natural world plays a large influence on her work.

Baird grew up in upstate New York on Lake George surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains. She then earned her BFA in Sculpture and Studio for Interrelated Media (SIM) from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Essa moved to Seattle in 2018 and in 2019 became a member of Side Rail Collective in the historic Georgetown district.

I am an architect and artist and I find one discipline feeds the other constantly. I love to draw, sketch and paint in watercolor, acrylic and oils. I am happy to be a member of Siderail as well as work and create in the Georgetown neighborhood on a daily basis.

Jen is a beer brewer by day and in her free time runs Eel and the Electrician - a web-based lifestyle market that offers high quality housewares, glassware and trinkets for the modern rebel. She also hosts pop up shops and mocktail bars using seasonal produce to create shrubs. Jen loves being apart of the collective and is constantly inspired by the creative energy the members of the studio provide.

Based in Seattle, Francesca Rosati has been working as a Visual Arts Educator in a 6 through 12 Seattle Independent School for the past two years. Before she was living in Providence, earning her BFA in Painting and then MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) at the Rhode Island School of Design. In recent years, she has made paintings inspired by everyday objects and mementos, like postcards, old tin boxes, or books. Working from found imagery, drawings, collages, photographs, and life observation, she incorporates her experiences and makes paintings. What fascinates her is focusing on routine, ritual, memory, materials, and objects that surround her everyday life. In painting these subjects not only does she get to be able to continue to appreciate them, but she gets to extend the power they channel.

Syd is a ceramic artist and teacher. She has taught clay art in Seattle public schools and private classes for many years. In her teaching she often introduces imagery. She then trains the hand building and sculpting skills that emerge naturally, as students connect with their own personal responses to the imagery.

Syd’s inspiration comes through Neolithic pottery, the Minoan civilization, preColombian ceramics, patterns found in nature, and archetypal astrology.

Molly McLauchlan is an emerging Seattle based mixed media artist. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, cultural influences, and the ever-evolving world around her, Molly creates artwork that invites viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery and reflection. Exploring themes of identity, memory, and interconnectedness, her art serves as a reflection of the human experience. Through a dynamic fusion of mixed media techniques, she creates artwork that speaks to the complexities of life, inviting viewers to find meaning and connection in their own personal narratives. As an emerging artist, Molly’s hope is for her art to be a source of inspiration, evoking laughter, nostalgia, or a sense of shared humanity.

Passionate about fostering creativity and making art accessible, Molly expanded her love for artistic exploration during her studies at Syracuse University where she received her BFA in studio art and art education. She currently works as a teacher for a Montessori preprimary classroom.

Jaclyn Cochran, is a mixed media artist native to the Pacific Northwest, and brings over two decades of experience to her dynamic artistic practice. Specializing in acrylic and watercolor painting, collages, and drawing, she infuses her work with a deep appreciation for texture, abstract forms, and a rich palette of colors inspired by the natural beauty of her surroundings.

Deeply committed to sharing her passion for art, Jaclyn actively engages with her community by organizing engaging art experiences. She leads creative kids' art sessions that nurture young imaginations and hosts popular adult paint and sip events that blend artistic expression with social interaction, creating memorable experiences for all participants. She loves to collaborate with non-profits to bring art and inspiration to under-resourced communities. Jaclyn believes that art should be accessible and a shared experience.

Jaclyn's multifaceted portfolio is a testament to her skillful fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques, capturing the essence of her artistic journey. Through her innovative and inclusive approach, she continues to inspire and uplift others, leaving an enduring mark on the local art scene.

I'm Christen Coomer and Deodata, known as Deo, was my grandmother. Today Deo’s inspiration lives on and takes the form of Deodata Design, my creative pursuit as a metalsmith and jeweler. Deo inspired and helped me to create my first business as a child, designing handmade greeting cards which she and her friends purchased. She supplied the watercolor paper and paints, and encouraged my creativity and business thinking. Deodata Design is a convergence of experiences, stories, and cultural reflections portrayed in the form of jewelry.

I am a Seattle-based musician and visual artist, mostly working with acrylic and collage. Making art is where I can drop out of the demands of daily life and just be busy with my hands. The launch point is either a vague concept, image, or visual pattern that has caught my attention. I rarely have a sense of how a piece will turn out–I see it as an opportunity for play and to relinquish the impulse to control outcomes. I am excited to be part of Side Rail!

My name is Lily Hotchkiss. I have been making things since as long as I can remember! Doodling, constructing, collecting things and turning them into other things. I am unable to explore and dedicate myself to a single medium, I love them all! My primary focus is painting, mixed-media, and ceramics, well and small sculptures with reclaimed materials. I have several long term projects like my ancestor series and my exploration of home and our sense of place, in addition to small collections. The circle stories is my current small collection exploring fleeting moments and trees. In addition to art making I am a teaching artist, an art form in itself, and currently teach grades 6-12 at Seattle Academy. My dream job! I am thrilled to be a part of Side Rail Collective.

I specialize in teaching Vocal techniques that support: Classical, Jazz/Improvisation, Pop, Folk, Spiritual/Blues, Spoken Work & Experimental genres and am uniquely equipped to teach the a cappella form called Circle Singing. I’ve studied with Bobby McFerrin, Pauline Oliveros, Meredith Monk's Ensemble, Kurt Elling and other renown musicians as well as having toured the US/Alaska, Canada and Western Europe as a soloist, choral director, studio musician and/or instructor.

Born in Chicago, my family moved to the PNW when I was 16yrs. Since then I’ve earned my Masters of Fine Arts in Improvisation from Goddard College and a Bachelor in Music from Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts in Vocal Jazz. My Voice Studio is based in Tacoma where I teach both In-Studio and Zoom lessons. Photography is a special interest of mine and I look forward to sharing both Music and Photography at Side Rail.

 Court Core is a multidisciplinary artist, creative, and community contributor based out of the stolen lands of the Duwamish and Coast Salish people (Seattle, WA). Recognizing the healing and connecting power of artistic expression, they curate a monthly Seattle art community event calendar on their website and eagerly show their art in group shows at galleries including The Fishbowl, Side Rail Collective, Central Art Press and Gallery B612. 

As a queer, nonbinary, fat, autistic person, most of Courtney’s work comes from a place of healing their inner child. Engaging with any and all mediums - their bright color palette expresses their release from the societal expectations that dictated their presentation throughout childhood and young adulthood. Challenging their perfectionistic tendencies, the ever-changing nature and subject of work reflect their self-exploration and learning as they continue to find out - who is Courtney Burrow?
